Chapter 1 - The Beginning
Welcome to the very beginning of the creation of Ezra's Cove. This week I show you where it all begins - I cleared out a small room in my craft studio. I have all my supplies ready: piles of foam board, glue and glue sticks, rulers, pencils, x-acto knives and anything else I think I might need. This is a quick look at the process I use to cut all the pieces for each building, then assemble them. And just like that, Ezra's Cove begins!
This project has been stewing in the back of my mind for a while and this week I decided to do something about it. This is not the first time I made a little town from foam board, but it will be the last. This time, I started by making some basic drawings on graph paper, then began cutting! (If you are curious to see my earlier works, go to www.13sites.com and scroll down to the bottom of the page where you'll find a link for the making of Fern Lake and another for miniatures.)
I cut out all the pieces for one building at a time. I cut openings for the windows and doors, and will decide on their trim and finishing later on, when I have the interior and exterior close to complete.
I used white glue to attach the pieces to each other. I use a few stick pins on each connection to hold them securely. Sometimes I remove the pins once the glue dries, and sometimes I don't. No small kids around so that's not an issue.
This first building has three stories, so I'll make three sections. This bottom section will be a shop of some sort and the upper two will be homes or apartments for the future residents.
The first section of the first building is done. It's just an empty shell right now and will need interior and exterior work, but first all the basic shells get put together. I'll go ahead and get this building's section finished.
