Chapter 6 - A lot of little things
It's time to make a bunch of the little extra parts I'm going to need. Some I'll figure out as I work on each individual building, but the more I can make now, the faster I can complete each building. First I need to finish a few parts for the manor. It needs this extension for part of the house to sit on. It's a simple tray sort of piece with plain columns.
The house needed this part to look more balanced. And this gives this tiny room a nice big balcony. I also made columns to go by the main door. These were made by scoring the foam core, then bending it on the score lines. Same technique that I used on the tower rooms last week.
Next I started on some small pieces needed for different buildings. Chimneys were made for a few buildings, making sure the pitch was correct for each one. By using the scrap foam board left over from cutting the front peak, the angle was perfect. Just needed to add two sides and the top piece.
Chimney is ready to be finished. I considered leaving the top open, but figured it would be a good place to collect dust or a random dead bug!
A few more peaked roof chimneys and then some additional pieces for the flat roof buildings. Not sure what each of these pieces will end up to be, but they will go on different roofs as something.
Next I put together a few sets of steps for the buildings that needed them. I made the ones for the manor first, and had so many markings on the pieces that I covered the sides with scrapbook paper before I even put them together.

Here you can see all the lines I drew on the side of the steps so I could cut them accurately. I mark up one side and cut it, then trace around it to cut the second side.
Since this set of steps is solid, I didn't need to cover up all the lines on the inside since they won't be visible like the steps for the manor are.

I made railings and fences for a few buildings. This piece I was trying something different - gluing sucker sticks to two strips of chipboard that were covered with glue. Not exactly sure where this will go in the town, just wanted to try it.
10.
The addition I put on the manor seemed like it needed a railing so I made this one by cutting a bunch of thin strips of foam board and gluing a top and bottom rail to them. They aren't perfectly straight, but it's an old manor, so that's ok.

I tried cutting out the openings between the rails this time, instead of making all the separate pieces and gluing them together. This ended up taking longer and looks messier. I'll have to cover a lot of it with papers.

Last, I decided some of the buildings can have a solid wall around their balcony. These will be covered with brick or wood papers. And that's about it for this week. Next week I pick a building and start working on the interior and exterior - at last!
